It would solve the problem with text only browsers. But my point is I am happy to see that someone cares about making accessible sites. I also seldom use technically impaired browser and with my dismay lots of sites do not work well. @zoid, I always wondered why xkcd does not put the line inside the “alternative” text of the picture. Sometimes I use lynx myself - which is an obvious bad choice to read webcomics - but a good choice to read websites if you only have a terminal (except these websites use asshole-javascript, asshole-flash or even worse asshole-java). @etb, that xkcd interface is (besides the reasons MyValdez already pointed out) not accessible for impaired people (either technically or physically). It's very interesting, but I think the real Randall is better with hardware than software. Although he has been known to hack together some pretty awesome stuff... I just found this comic…

It doesn't need to be in the comic because it talks about something that doesn't actually belong in the comic's universe but is nice to know. I would rather have that comment outside the comic than in the actual comic, fighting for comic space. Also, out-of-band information is common in other media. Do you know that there is no paper in the Star Wars universe? You don't? Well, now you know. Its not that important to put in the movies but its nice to know. @etb, imho, that interface has always been horrible. I read comics on Opera's RSS reader. Whenever xkcd comics arrives (or other comics who copied that interface, for that matter), I have to view the feed's source code so I could read the actual comment. Its an unnecessary hassle. tip: viewing the source code, /title= is faster than pointing and waiting for 5 seconds. @k Its an extra out-of-band information.
